First United Methodist Church

Built in 1828, the First United Methodist Church has seen a lot in almost 200 years. According to legend, the church’s preschool was used at one time as a morgue where undertakers prepared newly-dead bodies. In the basement, there are a series of tunnels that lead to other parts of the Gallatin square. The tunnels are rumored to have helped slaves escape to the north so they could be free and were part of the Underground Railroad during the 19th century.

Voices and footsteps have been heard, and doors open and shut on their own inside the church. Shadow figures as well as ‘The Lady in White’ have been seen in different parts of the church, just off the Gallatin square.
